The Process
“Caraval” consists of a form-fitting velvet gown with a low cut back and sweetheart neckline. A crinoline cage in the shape of a carousel perches on the hips and adds a touch of whimsy. Completely removable, the carousel features a striped tent, horses gilt in gold and pearls, and large gems stitched along the edge.
The carousel is held up by a tie that cinches at the waist. A belt resembling two carnival mirrors is wrapped around the top to hid the separate parts. Dangling from the tent are four paper-mache horses with wire skeletons. This craftsmanship keeps the adornment from becoming too heavy. They are then painted and paired with a pole made in a similar fashion.
The velvet gown itself is a mermaid-tail style with princess seams shaping it to the body. The seams extend down to the paneled skirt, allowing for a voluptuous drape. The mirror belt and carousel hide the corset back closure. There are three total layers to the gown. The fashion front matches that of the carousel to create a sense of unity. A soft silk lining protects the body from the pile fabric, and in between them exists a stiff interfacing made from canvas and boning that gives the gown its structure.
